How Horizontal Drilling Works

Directional drilling and trenchless technologies are gradually replacing traditional open-cut excavation. HDD enables quick connections of pipes and other underground amenities on sites where trenching is not feasible. The subsurface bore paths help to drastically reduce public disturbance or damage to existing buildings or natural resources.

In underground drilling, a surface-mounted directional drilling rig is used, which can push, rotate and pull strings of steel drilling rods. The drill string is directed along a pre-determined bore path, i.e.; from the drilling rig to an exit pit hole. From here, the steering head is released and replaced by a hole opener, which is also called a reamer. The conduit is now directly linkable behind the hole opener through a swivel.

Horizontal drilling can be used to drill multiple boreholes from the same rig. This technology was a turning point for water mains and pipelines, installing sewers, upgrading power cables, installing new gas cables, and storm drains. Underground boreholes can be a 10 meter or deeper, depending on the project's topography. HDD technology is compatible with pipes made of different materials (steel, polyethylene, PVC) and later joined into one continuous length.
